Zanzibar is also known as "Spice Island" for its major production and exporting of spice such as Turmeric, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Black Peppers, Cloves, Nutmegs, and so on for centuries. Spice plantations also had herb plants such as neem trees, red sap and various fruits such as jack fruit, custard apple, rambutan, and carambola. Zanzibar dealt with spices and herbs since the 15th century under the rule of the Sultan of Kilwa. Other popular spices include tamarind, vanilla, ginger, and menthol, to mention just a few. Most spices were introduced by the Omani Arabs and other nations in the 18th century, spices play an important role in the history of Zanzibari culture and the economy. Spices led to the famous acknowledgement of Zanzibar making it a popular market in the Indian ocean and later led to slavery. Till today spices are very important to Zanzibar's economy and used by the locals daily in various ways.

Some are used as fragments and perfumes for their wonderful scents. Some are even used as remedies, such as the leaves of the neem tree which were found to be very helpful against indigestion and malaria, or the red sap from the iodine tree that helps to fight against infections. Others were used for cosmetic purposes, such as the foaming berries that were used for centuries as an alternative to soap and the cloves from the henna tree that are used to produce dye for the hands and feet while others are used as pesticides. During this tour you may also have the opportunity of getting a piece of body art made on you. This is carried out by using quick drying Indian ink, instead of henna, which takes longer to dry.
